Steam is one option. Not sure how readily things like a boiler would be. I also thought perhaps we could build a small water-wheel. Water pours out of a basin and turns the wheel, which turns the pulley.

Of course this is all complicating what could be a simply pulley system... perhaps we focus on that first and see how much effort it takes us to keep it running, how often it realistically gets used.
